ABSTRACT

When focusing on human well-being, the natural senses need a certain level of consideration to produce user stimulation. The senses as communication tools, can be utilized in achieving an accomplished meaning of space. These senses are critical to understand, as they formulate human experiences. The built environment can offer a beneficial human experience through multi-sensory design.

As most people create associations from their experience with the emotive qualities, subconsciously an evaluation based on the senses is formulated. This underlines how such design techniques are critical components towards establishing unique and diverse experiences for users.

This design method intends to create a guide of various spatial experience tools by challenging the conventional design practices. The most important relationship within design is that of ourselves and our environment. This study aims to convert users from uninvolved spectators to active participants within their spatial surroundings. Exploring design techniques utilized in creating multi-sensory environments will push the limits of design, through engagement of the sensibilities.
